Sexual Health Check

Tested for and treated quickly and easily, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are spread through unprotected sexual intercourse.

About Sexually Transmitted Infections:

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a group of infections spread through unprotected sexual intercourse. Whilst STI symptoms are often unpleasant, if caught early, most can be treated quickly and easily. STIs can be passed onto others, as well as lead to worsening infections and fertility issues if not treated.

Chlamydia is the most common STI in New Zealand and is caused by infection with a specific bacteria. Some people with chlamydia may have no symptoms, while others may experience symptoms like discharge from the vagina or penis, painful urination, and lower tummy pain. Chlamydia can be easily treated with antibiotics.

Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). People with genital herpes may develop irritated skin and painful blistered lesions in the genital area, lasting days or weeks, and may feel generally unwell with an active infection. Once infected with this virus, it remains in your body and can become active and cause new lesions. Although genital herpes cannot be cured, antiviral medications can improve symptoms in an outbreak.
